UMS was founded in 1998 by Brian Coughlan, a former power company executive, to help utility customers save money. As an engineer and account rep, he noticed many businesses missed out on savings because utility rate plans were complex. He also discovered that utilities don't audit their own billing for errors or overcharges, which led him to start UMS with the belief that customer savings are always the company's priority.
